Metric prefixes do not make algorithms comparable. Different algorithms perform different computation and memory access.
In a simplified model, participant share is close to device hashrate divided by total network hashrate. If the network grows while the device stays unchanged, the participant represents a smaller share.
Difficulty controls how rare a valid result is. Many networks adjust it to target a block interval as total work changes, but the formula and adjustment window are protocol-specific.
Higher difficulty generally reduces expected results per unit of unchanged hashrate, all else equal. Price, reward and uptime can change at the same time.
Proof of Work is probabilistic. Short periods can deviate from the average even at constant hashrate. Pools reduce participant variance but do not remove block-finding randomness.
