CPU, GPU and ASIC cannot be ranked by one hashrate

The algorithm comes first. Then compare whole-system efficiency, memory, cooling, ownership cost, uptime and what happens when conditions change.

Start with the algorithm

Hashrate only has meaning for a particular algorithm and implementation. One million hashes on one algorithm are not equivalent to one million hashes on another.

For a network or miner that is not public, compatibility and profit cannot be inferred from marketing claims.

CPU: accessible but not automatically profitable

CPUs handle varied workloads and some algorithms are designed around memory or general-purpose features. Compare threads, memory, whole-system power, temperature and the impact on other work.

GPU: parallelism, memory and tuning

GPU performance depends on the algorithm, VRAM capacity and bandwidth, clocks, voltage, drivers and cooling. Multi-GPU systems also require power supplies, wiring and airflow.

ASIC: efficiency and concentrated risk

Specialization may improve efficiency but reduces alternative uses. Evaluate supply, warranty, repair, noise, heat, power requirements and future liquidity.

Compare total ownership cost

Purchase price alone is incomplete. Add infrastructure, electricity, maintenance, downtime and expected disposal or residual value.

  • Use measured performance for the exact algorithm.
  • Compare hashes per watt only within the same algorithm.
  • Include the complete system, not one component.
  • Reject fixed-income or guaranteed-payback claims.
